A consensus mechanism is the method by which a distributed blockchain network agrees on the current state of the ledger and validates new transactions. Different mechanisms offer varying trade-offs between security, decentralization, scalability, and energy efficiency. The two most common types are Proof of Work (used by Bitcoin) and Proof of Stake (used by Ethereum and many newer chains).
